Why aren't young adults flourishing?

Recent Research form the Global Flourishing Study conducted by Harvard and Baylor University found that young adults are not as happy as they used to be. The well known “U-shaped happiness curve” – in which levels of happiness are highest among adults 18-24, decreasing toward mid-life, and increasing again – has disappeared. The data shows that teens and young adults aren’t as happy as they used to be. This is true in the U.S. and around the globe.

Research also shows that the rates of loneliness, depression and anxiety are on the rise in adolescents and young adults. Many young people are lacking the skills and relationships that help them struggle well and cope with adversity.

Relationships with Adults Matter for Youth to Thrive

Positive adult relationships are important to help youth to thrive. Young people who have strong developmental relationships with adults at school and at home improve their motivation and purpose – two critical factors in determining the levels of happiness.

The Search Institute defines five key elements for adults to build positive developmental relationships with youth:

  • Express Care – spend time with young people and showing them that they matter
  • Challenge Growth – motivate young people to learn and get better
  • Provide Support – help them break down tasks and achieve results
  • Share Power – give young people a voice and a say, listen to their perspectives
  • Expand Possibilities – help young people broaden their worldview and embrace new experiences
