Developmental Assets are the Key to Unlocking Academic Success

With back-to-school time in full swing, students are hearing a lot about how they can achieve academic success. But academic success is about more than just grades and test scores. It’s also the drive to try new experiences, take healthy risks, learn from failure, and try again.

Developmental experiences in school shape young people in their identity, their confidence, and their resilience. Research from The Search Institute has demonstrated that when students have a strong foundation of Developmental Assets, it improves their ability to thrive academically.

What Are Developmental Assets?

Developmental Assets are the 40 internal and external building blocks that all adolescents need to thrive.

Internal Assets include personal attributes and qualities like motivation, responsibility, integrity, and self-esteem.

External Assets include family, school, and community supports like positive role models, healthy boundaries, and safe environments.

Research demonstrates that when students have a healthy level of Developmental Assets (30-40), they are  more likely to thrive in school, and less likely to engage in unhealthy risk-taking behaviors.

Discover You™ Builds Developmental Assets in Youth

During summer camp, The ROCK included Discover You™ content to challenge their campers and give them opportunities to practice teamwork, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making. Students made creative ball runs using everyday objects, then reflected on what they learned, and how they could change their design to improve for next time. This is asset building in action!

When students feel supported, empowered, and capable, they’re more likely to engage in school, set ambitious goals, and persist through challenges. Discover You™ is a unique, research based program designed to build Developmental Assets in and out of the classroom. Discover You™ doesn’t just prepare students for academic success; it helps them build a foundation for lifelong achievement.
