When you invest in The ROCK, you’re doing more than funding programs. You’re also shaping futures. Emily’s journey is a powerful example of how community support creates lasting impact.

Emily's Story

On the last day of fifth grade, Emily ran off the bus, thrilled to finally join the afterschool program she heard so much about from her sister. She didn’t know that she was stepping into a 15-year relationship with The ROCK, a place that would influence nearly every part of her life.

As a student, Emily found more than a safe space to go after school. She found mentors, stability, and lifelong friends. When tragedy struck her family during middle school, Emily faced overwhelming grief and shame. Unsure of how to process her emotions, she turned to her mentors at The ROCK for support.  She recalls a staff member telling her, “Your life is your life, and the life your mother lived is not your legacy.” That perspective changed everything. It gave her hope and a vision for her future.

Behind that moment were supporters who made sure The ROCK had caring staff and programs ready to meet Emily’s needs. Their investment created a space where she could belong, heal, and grow.

Serving Others

Years later, Emily returned to The ROCK, not as a student, but as a staff member. She worked as an Out-of-School Time staff member and Discover You™ coach, teaching lessons in gratitude, respect, forgiveness, and identity:  the same lessons that once shaped her own life. She carried with her the voices of mentors like Bev, who always asked, “Well, what are we going to do about it?” Throughout her journey, she remembers always having the power handed back to her, knowing her mentors were always in her corner.

Today, Emily serves as Secretary on The ROCK’s Board of Directors. Her commitment is fueled by gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility. She credits her time at The ROCK for her lifelong commitment to giving back to her community, saying, “The lessons I learned as a kid showed up in powerful ways: empathy, respect for myself and others, emotional resilience, and lifelong connection.”

Emily’s story is proof that donor support doesn’t just change lives—it helps young people build them. Your generosity creates opportunities for teens to discover who they are, overcome challenges, and one day give back to the community that shaped them.
