Developing a Zest for Business with The ROCK and Dow Credit Union

This past week, students at The ROCK wrapped up an exciting journey of entrepreneurship through the Lemonade Day program, proudly presenting and selling their own products after months of planning and preparation. The program, offered in partnership with Dow Credit Union, gave students the unique opportunity to learn what it takes to start, own, and operate a business. In keeping with the theme of lemonade day, students brought forth the character strength of Zest.

According to the VIA Character Strengths framework, zest means approaching a situation with excitement and energy, and not approaching tasks or activities halfway or halfheartedly. It’s a key component of overall well-being, linked to resilience, happiness, and greater life satisfaction.

Our students demonstrated this strength throughout the Lemonade Day program, embracing every step of the entrepreneurial journey with enthusiasm and creativity. Their zest for learning and building their own businesses turned planning into an adventure and selling into a celebration of hard work and courage.

Turning Ideas Into Business Plans

Throughout the program, students worked hard to create their own business plans, learning essential skills like budgeting, marketing, and customer service. These hands-on experiences didn’t just teach financial literacy. They built confidence, creativity, and career readiness. The mission of Lemonade Day is to prepare youth for life through fun, proactive, and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education, and entrepreneurship. By fostering self-esteem and forward-thinking mindsets, the program helps shape tomorrow’s business leaders, social advocates, and community volunteers.

This week, students at our Jefferson and Meridian afterschool sites showcased their hard work during their final event, where they marketed and sold the products they created. The energy and excitement were contagious as students pitched their ideas to visitors and proudly displayed their booths. Due to a snow day, the Northeast Middle School event has been rescheduled—but we’re thrilled to invite you to join us there on Wednesday, December 17th, from 4–6 PM for another inspiring showcase!

Partnerships Make it Possible

Programs like Lemonade Day thrive because of strong community partnerships. We’re grateful to Dow Credit Union for making this experience possible for our students. Their support went beyond funding: Dow Credit Union employees coached students throughout the program, and Dow Credit Union President and CEO, Michael Goad, visited each student booth, listened to product pitches, and encouraged these budding entrepreneurs. This kind of engagement shows how partnerships enhance The ROCK’s mission to empower youth and create opportunities they might not otherwise pursue. Thank you to Dow Credit Union employees, ROCK parents, and all of the community members who showed up for Lemonade Day to support the students. We hope to see you at Northeast next week!
