It’s hard to believe, but we’re already a month into the new school year! We’re excited so share what our teens have been up to this month, and some fun new events coming up:

Leisure Time Helps Youth Thrive at The ROCK

Parents and caregivers want their children to thrive academically. At The ROCK, we know that learning doesn’t stop when the school bell rings. Our programs offer teens a powerful opportunity to build their confidence, relationships, and academic drive.

A recent study from Michigan State University demonstrates the value of afterschool programs for students. The findings might surprise you: more time spent doing leisure activities (defined as recreation, social time, physical movement, youth development, arts, and health and nutrition) resulted in improved math scores. At The ROCK, we give teens a space where they can take a break from the school day, try new experiences, and have fun!

All Play and No Work?

While leisure time has a positive impact on youth, we also know that academic support after school matters. At The ROCK, we balance opportunities with a combination of leisure, academic support, and building positive relationships. Weekly activities give teens a chance to do it all. For example, in the string maze photo below, teens are practicing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving with a healthy dose of fun!

Students at The ROCK experience:

  • Leisure opportunities:  Teens get to play and have fun with sports, yoga, arts, and games
  • Academic enrichment: Students can participate in STEM activities, reading clubs, or get homework help from ROCK staff
  • Mentorship and Peer Relationships: Participants practice teamwork, leadership, and positive peer Interactions, with support from adult role Models

Play with Purpose: Teens at The ROCK Build Developmental Assets

Afterschool time is more than just a gap between school and dinner. The ROCK offers teens a chance to grow in their confidence, curiosity, and academic success. Our programs have been demonstrated to build Developmental Assets in youth, the 40 building blocks they need to thrive, and Developmental Relationships, the positive adult relationships that help youth to overcome challenges and build positive self-image.

Ready for More Play?

We invite teens to join us for teen nights at the Midland Mall! On September 26th, we will host a Glow-in-the-Dark themed party for teens 11-17 to socialize, enjoy hands-on activities, and connect with peers under the guidance of ROCK staff. Check our schedule for a new teen event each month!
