What does it mean for a young person to flourish?

Flourishing is about more than academic success: it includes building confidence and curiosity, discovering strengths, developing new skills, and believing in a future full of possibility. Research shows that high‑quality out‑of‑school‑time programs are uniquely positioned to help young people flourish. This is why we’re excited to share the theme for our 2026 annual dinner, “Flourish.” This theme celebrates the powerful role afterschool programs play in helping young people not just get by, but truly thrive. In the weeks leading up to the dinner, we will be sharing stories from alumni of The ROCK programs, and how their time at The ROCK helped them to flourish.

Flourishing includes academic foundations paired with confidence, belonging, and purpose. The ROCK builds our Out-of-School Time Program on this foundation, offering students unique opportunities to build skills and confidence for the future.

Afterschool Programs Help Youth to Flourish

The hours after school are a critical time for growth and development. Research demonstrates youth who consistently participate in afterschool programs from elementary school through adolescence show significantly better outcomes in adulthood, including higher educational attainment, income, and occupational status by age 26, and demonstrate lower levels of unhealthy risk taking.

Flourishing Through STEM

STEM learning plays a vital role in helping young people flourish in today’s world. Afterschool STEM programs offer students hands‑on, real‑world learning experiences that deepen understanding while fostering curiosity and resilience.

Research shows that youth who participate in afterschool STEM programs experience:

  • Increased engagement and interest in STEM subjects
  • Greater confidence and persistence in problem solving
  • Stronger awareness of future careers and pathways

At The ROCK, we design STEM programming to help youth flourish by encouraging exploration, creativity, and experimentation in an environment where learning feels exciting, relevant, and achievable.

Discover You™: Helping Young People Flourish as Their Whole Selves

Flourishing is not just about what young people learn; it’s also about who they become. The ROCK’s Discover You™ activities intentionally support adolescent development by helping students identify their interests, develop self-awareness and leadership skills, and reflect on who they are and who they want to be. When young people feel supported, seen, and encouraged to explore their potential, they flourish.

A Flourishing Community

Flourishing doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when communities invest time, care, and resources into creating opportunities where young people can grow, thrive, and dream. Together, we are helping youth build the skills, confidence, and vision they need to shape their futures.

We invite you to join us on March 12th for The ROCK’s Annual Dinner. Celebrate the impact our programs, hear stories of youth flourishing, and learn how your support helps make these opportunities possible.

Together, we can help the next generation not just succeed—but flourish.
